Apple Orange Smoothie

I like this refreshing drink as part of my breakfast. It’s also a great use for organic Red Delicious apples–which tend to get soft fairly quickly–but are perfect in a smoothie. The dark red skin of this apple is very high in plant-based phytochemicals, so don’t peel the apple!  Four basic whole foods, and some water, that’s it! The dark red apple skin also gives this drink a nice light color with flecks of red.


Apple Orange Smoothie

1 apple, washed, cored, and cut into chunks

1 orange, washed, peeled, and cut into chunks

½ banana, peeled

1 tablespoon flax seeds

1 cup filtered water

1 teaspoon spirulina (optional)–adding this will make the drink very dark green!


Combine all ingredients in blender. Blend on low for 10 seconds; increase to high for 10-15 seconds (depending on strength of blender). Add ¼ of water or plant-based milk if thinner consistency is desired. If additional sweetening is also desired, add one Medjool date.  Enjoy!
